Literacy - HMH Into Reading

P.S.105 uses the new HMH Into Reading program. It is a Science of Reading research-based comprehensive literacy program. It provides explicit, systematic instruction across all strands of literacy—reading, vocabulary, foundational skills, and writing. It is taught daily within a set literacy block.

Academic vocabulary is taught using a structured model that fosters language acquisition and reading comprehension.  The model includes instruction on pronunciation, definition, synonyms and antonyms. Student center learning tasks are designed to support vocabulary development in all classrooms.

Phonemic awareness and phonics instruction (Word Study) are introduced in all K-2 classes through a multi-sensory approach known as Orton-Gillingham (OG).  This is a highly structured approach that breaks reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds. Teachers work on these skills each day throughout the year along with rules for spelling.

The instruction model used is known as the “The Gradual Release of Responsibility Workshop Model” that progresses from teacher modeling to guided practice and independent practice. The workshop model is conducted through whole and small group instruction with feedback focusing on academic advancement.
